Think Small Shop Local

Can you believe another trip around the sun is coming to an end for 2017?! Winter solstice is right around the corner and we're in full mercury retrograde mud up to our knees. Our world is changing, the mud is thick. Time to think strategically and proactively about the world we live in and how we want to show up in it.

For creatives, as the holiday season approaches and we begin to go within and settle in to short days and long cold nights, this also means tirelessly chipping away at artistic endeavors in an attempt to keep up with last minute shopping frenzy. 'Tis the season for what I call, rage painting, crafting, writing, sculpting, etc. Also, rage posting, hashtagging, uploading, photo’ing, filtering, etc. Rage (insert verb of choice)- meaning doing something with extreme quickness and intensity.

We work our little hearts out to keep our websites stocked and customers happy. For small businesses, good customer service and a supportive community can be the difference between being able to compete and survive and failing. Debbi Moore, the president/CEO of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce states, “A growing amount of research is proving something that many people already know; small-scale, locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, entrepreneurial, connected, and generally better off across a wide range of metrics. This continual commitment puts the “community” into “community.” For this reason, I’m going to share several reasons why you should shop local and support small businesses this holiday season. 1. Reduce environmental impact. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases — meaning less transportation, lower energy and fuel costs, and less excessive packaging. Ateliê Artisanal Crafts & Designs takes its ecological responsibility seriously with a commitment to civic engagement and environmental stewardship by to donating a percentage of proceeds toward planting, beautification and educational efforts of the local non-profit environmental organization, Asheville GreenWorks. When you buy one of our pieces your money goes to work right away, not only supporting local artisans, but also planting a tree via Asheville GreenWorks in Asheville and surrounding counties. 2. Keep your money in your local economy longer. Local businesses keep your money here longer by investing in local supplies, wages, and services. 3. Shape the character of our community. Where we shop, where we eat and have fun — all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses make up Asheville’s distinctive character. Spend local and embrace our unique identity. 4. Feel good about your purchases. Local businesses are owned and operated by people who live in this community and are invested in its future.

Say no to big-box retail! Approximately 70% of Walmart’s products are made in China; by buying items at Walmart you are supporting child labor, contemporary forms of slavery and capitalism.

Our everyday decisions have powerful impacts and each one of us has an important role to play in creating a vibrant community and healthy economy. Show some love and support your local artists by shopping small this holiday season! Support real people! Holiday greetings from Ateliê Artisanal Crafts & Designs!
